How to properly install the Windows operating system on your computer or laptop

Many people may think that the whole installation may seem like a very complicated and time-consuming task, and it’s better to take your computer to some special service to have everything installed, but in fact, let’s be honest, this process is quite simple and straightforward if you follow simple instructions.
No matter if it’s a new computer or you’re reinstalling the system on an old device.
Let’s take a closer look at how to do it. What do you need to install? Before you start, make sure you have everything you need: The original version of Windows. This can be a DVD or USB drive with a burned Windows image.
If you do not have such a media, you can create it yourself by downloading the official tool from Microsoft on their website. License key. To activate the OS, you will need the license key you received when you purchased the system. Backup of important files. If you’re reinstalling the system, be sure to back up your important files, as all data on the system disk may be erased during the installation process. Creating a bootable USB drive As we mentioned above, if you don’t have a ready-made Windows disk or USB drive, you’ll need to create one yourself.
The easiest way is to download an official tool from Microsoft that will automatically burn Windows to a USB flash drive.
It’s pretty easy to do.

  1. Download the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft website at https://www.microsoft.com/uk-ua/software-download/windows10.
  2. Insert an empty USB drive (at least 8 GB) into your computer.
  3. Run the downloaded tool and select “Create installation media for another PC”.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to select the Windows version and language, and the program will automatically download the system image and write it to a USB flash drive.

Configure the BIOS to boot from a USB flash drive or DVD Now that you have a Windows bootable media, the next step is to configure your computer’s BIOS to boot from a USB flash drive or DVD.

  1. Turn off your computer and then turn it back on.
  2. At startup, press the key to enter the BIOS.
    This can be the “Del”, “F2”, “F10”, or another key, depending on the motherboard manufacturer.
    Information about which key to press usually appears on the screen when the computer starts.
  3. In the BIOS menu, find the “Boot” or “Loading” section.
    Change the boot order by installing the bootable device (flash drive or disk) first.
  4. Save your changes and exit the BIOS by pressing the F10 key.

The Windows installation process When your computer boots from a USB flash drive or disk, the Windows installation process begins.
Follow the steps below:

  1. After booting from the media, the Windows Setup window appears.
    Select the language, time format, and keyboard layout, and then click Next.
  2. Click the Install Now button.
  3. Enter your license key if you have one.
    If you do not have one at this time, select Skip (you can activate the system later).
  4. Accept the terms of the license agreement and click “Next”.

Selecting an installation type At this point, you will be prompted to select an installation type: “Update”: If you’re reinstalling the system and want to keep your files and settings, choose this option.
But keep in mind that the remnants of the old system may slow down your PC. “Selective installation: If you want a “clean” installation with all the data on the disk deleted, select this option. Disk partitions and formatting Assuming that you have selected the “Selective installation” option, you will see a list of hard disk partitions.
To perform a clean installation, do the following:

  1. Select the partition where the old operating system is installed and click Uninstall.
  2. If you have a new computer or a new hard disk, click Create to partition them.
  3. Select the desired partition to install Windows and click “Next”.
    After that, the installation process will begin.

Finish the installation Once the installation process begins, Windows will automatically copy files to your computer.
This process can take 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the speed of your computer.
During this time, the system will reboot several times – this is normal and you do not need to intervene. Initial system setup Afterwards, your computer will start up with the new operating system, and you will need to go through several stages of initial setup:

  1. Select a region and keyboard layout.
  2. Connect to a Wi-Fi network or via an Ethernet cable.
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft account or create a new one.
    This will allow you to synchronize your settings and access additional services, such as OneDrive.
  4. Configure your privacy settings.
    This is an equally important step, as you will be able to choose what information Microsoft collects (location, diagnostic data, etc.).

Activate Windows and install updates Once you’ve started up for the first time, you can activate Windows (unless you did so during installation).
Enter the license key you received with your purchase.
You can also go to Windows Update and check for updates.
They may contain important fixes and new features, so it’s best to install them right after you install the system. Please note! If you do not activate the system, you can use the computer, but with certain restrictions.

Installing drivers and software Finally, make sure that all drivers are installed correctly.
You can check this in the Device Manager.
And if any drivers are missing, download them from the official websites of the manufacturers of your computer components (for example, a video card or a network card).

The best option is to install Windows on an SSD disk.
This will significantly speed up the system’s bootup and improve the overall performance of your computer.
