CMS systems – briefly about the main thing

CMS or Content Management System, designed to organize the joint creation and management of a website. With the help of CMS, you can fill the site with content, change the resource, and administer it without having a programmer’s education. In other words, it is a single content storage center where authors create work, editors can modify and publish it, and administrators can do all of this, plus grant permissions to update and edit materials. CMS facilitates the work of those who want to maintain their website and fill it with the necessary content without any help, with virtually no limitations on their capabilities.

There are two main groups of CMS: enterprise content management systems and web content management systems.

CMS systems are used in their work:

  • SEO specialists – to set up criteria for the search engine;
  • Developers – to improve the parameters;
  • Content managers – to add and edit content directly on the page.

Types of CMS systems

Self-written. They are created for a specific project, taking into account individual requirements. The downside is that if you need to make changes, you will need the help of a specialist who can write code from scratch;

Framework. A set of files that make it easier to create software. Working on a framework is more expensive and requires the development of a separate control panel. But a huge advantage is that you can realize any ideas. For non-standard projects, it is an ideal option;

Open source. Open source means that the system can be modified by anyone. This keeps themes up-to-date and allows for faster troubleshooting.

Boxed. Closed source. That is, only special developers can make changes. The number of add-ons in such a system is usually smaller.

How does the CMS work?

  1. In any CMS system, you can work in your personal account. Sometimes it is called a console;
  2. You can install a ready-made template as a design on your website. Its elements – font, color, links, buttons – can be adjusted right in the control panel. Templates can be paid or free;
  3. Some CMSs support page builders, similar to presentations;
  4. After installing the CMS on your website, you will need the minimum, and it can be supplemented with extensions or plugins. For example, you can add the functionality of an online store, a pop-up window, a convenient payment method, and so on. Add-ons can also be paid and free. They can be found in a separate section of the console or on special thematic websites.

Advantages of CMS:

  • The ability to quickly create a website on your own;
  • Low costs;
  • Easy to manage without the need for specialists.

Disadvantages:

  • The need to constantly monitor updates. Comparing new versions with additions;
  • The number of updates depends on the efficiency of the site. The more updates, the lower the efficiency;
  • Not all functionality can be implemented;
  • If a non-standard task is set, it is likely that it will not be possible to implement it with the help of a CMS.
