Choosing the right type and perspective of COM ports

When choosing between RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485, it is important to consider your system requirements, as each port type has its own characteristics that are better suited for different use cases. Below are a few factors to consider when making your choice:

Distance and wvisibility

RS-232 is ideal for short distances, up to 15 meters, and low transmission speeds, making it an excellent choice for simple connections such as those between a computer and peripherals.

RS-422 provides better range (up to 1.2 km) and higher speed, and is very well suited for industrial applications where long distances between devices are required.

RS-485 comes out on top in terms of scalability and some other parameters. This port allows you to connect up to 32 (and sometimes more) devices on the network. It’s the perfect option for creating complex network systems with a large number of nodes.

These traditional standards continue to be used in many industries due to their unique advantages. Let’s look at the prospects of each of these standards separately and their place in the future.

RS-232

Although RS-232 may seem outdated for general use due to its limited data transfer speed and distance, it is still important for certain applications where simplicity and reliability are required. For example, in industrial environments, laboratory equipment, and for configuring networking equipment, RS-232 continues to be useful due to its compatibility and ease of use. It is expected to remain in the niche of these specialized applications.

RS-422

RS-422 is used in applications that require high reliability of transmission over long distances, such as industrial control systems and some types of telecommunications equipment. Its ability to provide reliable communication over distances of up to 1.2 km is critical for locations with large physical dimensions. It is also certainly expected to continue to be used in areas where these properties are essential.

RS-485

RS-485 probably has the most promising prospects of all the COM ports due to its scalability. It is well suited for creating complex network systems with a large number of nodes, especially in industry and automation. With the development of smart technologies and IoT (Internet of Things – *this was described in more detail in the article on the development of the Internet), the need for reliable, wired networks with a large number of connected devices will only grow. RS-485 can be a key component in the development of these systems, especially where wireless is not the optimal choice due to security, reliability, or interference issues.

Competition from newer technologies such as USB, Ethernet, and wireless standards aside, COM ports continue to be important in many specialized and industrial applications. Their simplicity, reliability, and wide support make them indispensable in certain contexts.
