In the fight for the future of the Internet, OpenAI is preparing to take a decisive step! And this step will be the launch of its own web browser that can compete with Google Chrome. According to Reuters, the company plans to present the product in the coming weeks. The new browser will feature deep integration of artificial intelligence: users will be able to interact with the web in a dialog format, and a special AI agent will perform everyday tasks, from searching for information to filling out forms.

This step could not only change the usual model of interaction with the Internet, but also become a serious challenge to Google’s dominance in the field of browsers and online advertising. Given that ChatGPT’s weekly audience exceeds 500 million active users, even a partial transition of this base to the new environment could significantly shift the balance of power. If OpenAI succeeds in integrating network, AI model, and data interaction in one environment, it will pave the way for the creation of an alternative advertising ecosystem that can challenge Google’s dominance.

It’s worth noting that the Chrome browser has long served not just as a web browsing tool, but as the backbone infrastructure for Alphabet’s advertising business, which generates about 70% of its revenue. In this context, the new OpenAI product may become an architectural alternative in the struggle for control over the main digital asset of the 21st century, which is undoubtedly user data.

Despite the fact that Google Chrome holds more than 65% of the global browser market share, competition in this segment is growing rapidly. Not only tech giants, but also new players with ambitions to transform the very principle of interaction with information are actively entering the game. In particular, Perplexity has already presented its own AI-oriented browser that demonstrates the transition from classical navigation to search in the form of a dialog with the LLM model.

Against this background, OpenAI is also strengthening its position. Although the company does not publicly disclose details, according to sources, it has deliberately abandoned the model of a plug-in or extension for existing browsers in favor of a full-fledged proprietary browser. This approach allows OpenAI to provide deeper integration of AI agents. This is done for an important function, such as gaining direct control over user data flows, without the mediation of third-party platforms.

In the long run, this creates the preconditions for a new architecture of digital interaction, where the browser ceases to be just a “window to the web” and becomes a mediator between the user and the AI environment, optimized for specific tasks rather than sites. Although websites will be present to some extent and will continue to perform their functions.

OpenAI goes beyond the usual use of artificial intelligence by creating a new generation browser – not just an interface for browsing the web, but an intelligent platform with a built-in agent capable of acting on behalf of the user. This approach not only challenges the dominance of Google Chrome, but also signals the beginning of a new era: the era of agent-based interaction, where AI does not just suggest, but performs actions.

With more than 500 million weekly users of ChatGPT, OpenAI has every chance to change the very architecture of access to information on the Internet – and possibly reshape the digital services market in the coming years.
